the dow and s&p and risen more than 100%. becky quick is here with the market rundown. try to help me out here. the markets love this economy and yet, we're not creating any jo jobs. >> yeah, the jobs number today was a disappointment. it came in at just 96,000 and the expec expectations were 125. a lot of analysts raised their number, so this was a disappointment. if you looked at the unemployment rate, it dropped. some would look at this and say it was decent. the headline tomorrow, it dropped to 8.3%, but economists i talked to said it's hard to spin this as a positive number. that number came down because the labor participation came down substantially, too. $250,000 fewer people were looking for jobs. that brought the labor participation rate down and that's the lowest level we've seen in 31 years. now, this goes back to the same story we've seen that companies are doing well, for profits are there. but ceos we talked to at least still express a lot of caution about hiring because they're just uncertain about where we are headed. there's a lot of things still loomi

a slew of economic reports are coming out this morning, including the s&p schillor index. becky quick is here. i was going to talk about bacon? >> bacon? >> the cost of pigs and bacon is going to get more expensive. in all seriousness this housing news is big news and i assume the markets will respond in kind? >> the markets are expecting to hear better news when it comes to housing because the expectation housing has turned the corner and a lot of have been waiting for even warren buffett telling us when housing turns the rest of the economy is going to turn. the other side of that, though, is that we have been hearing from a lot of these transport companies and talked already about how fedex and how the railroads warned over the last week and last night heard from caterpillar talking when it looks to 2015 the numbers are not as good as they had expected and commodity is lowering. the overall market is looking at the better side of this. the housing numbers looks like the dow is up by about 28 points. >> all right. becky quick, thank you very much. we will be back in 30 p

nasdaq slightly lower and dow and s&p are slightly higher. we got some disappointing economic numbers this morning. economists looked for housing starts to increase by 2.5%. they were only up by 2.3%. that may not sound like a big miss but housing's been a key. economists say you won't see a big change in the jobs picture until you see a change in the housing. it is responsible for so many jobs in not only construction but so many of the industries that are related to that, transportation for shipping goods to those homes to things like home depot and lowe's and things that supply details to go into those homes. that's a big key. we're watching that closely. also we've been hearing from some of the big retailers about what they plan to do this holiday season. kohl's says it will increase its holiday hiring by more than 10% over last year. target saying it is looking to hire between 80,000 and 90,000 new employees. it is a little bit below what they hired last year of 92,000. target does say that a lot of the people they hired last holiday sea
